Mtech Computer Science Admissions in IITs

So you really worked hard for GATE and appeared for the exam. Now the exam is over and you think you did well. Now starts the second phase of Mtech admissions, the post-GATE phase.Frankly, application procedure after GATE is no less hectic than the GATE preparation itself. You have to skim through lengthy prospectus of IITs, find relevant courses, get documents attested, get the DDs, and finally post the applications. You also have to do some more preparations as some of these institutes require you to appear for an additional written test or interview or both. In this article I discuss certain frequently asked questions by people applying to IITs after GATE.

Which IIT to apply to?

The answer would depend on your rank and your interest. But mostly it would depend on your rank. This is what I feel are the options available to you based on your rank in GATE(applicable for GE category, Computer Science only):
1) Rank 250 to 350: May get a call from IITK for written test. Mtech CS in IITG and IITR are also possible. Other possibilities are JCA at IITD, EET at IITD, MS in IITM and RA at IITB. For people with a btech CS background, I would suggest JCA at IITD after IITK.
2) Rank 200 to 250: All of the above plus may get a call from IITD for interview and IITKGP for counselling.
3) Rank 100 to 200: Should get a call from most IITs (except IITB) for written test/interview. Your selection will depend on your performance in interview, but there is still a lot of weightage on your GATE rank.
4) Rank 60s to 100: All IITs, chance of IITB mtech CS.
5) Rank 1 to 50: All IITs, IISc. People in this rank usually prefer IITB/IISc or direct admission in IITK. VDTT at iit delhi is also an option if you are interested in embedded/VLSI.

Note that this is based on previous years data. Since IITs are adding new courses and new seats to existing courses, the rank cutoff for some of these options could actually go down on a year-on-year basis. It is advisable that you apply to one or two categories higher than your rank. You never you, you might get a call.

Which IIT is better?

There is no universal answer to this question. For computer science, IITK is considered the one with the best Computer Science department. But IITK have a more research oriented mtech course as compared to other IITs. As such mtechs in IITK do less course work and more thesis work. This may be good for you if you are totally into research. IITK is followed by IITD, IITKGP and IITB. IITD and IITB have an edge over all other IITs when it comes to campus placements. IITM is not bad either. IITG and IITR are usually less preferred. Which IIT is better for you may also depend on your research interest. For eg. IIT Delhi is known for its Computer Vision and Graphics. IIT Delhi is also good for Networks as well as Semantics and Verification but not so good for Database related stuff. You can get some idea by looking as the list of professors currently in a particular IIT and their area of research. This should give you some idea.

Specializations?

There are very few specializations in IITs for mtech in computer science. Most IITs just have Mtech in Computer Science/IT etc. After you get admission to mtech, you can then choose your courses and project based on your interest. The only specialized course i know is VDTT at IIT Delhi. It specializes in embedded and VLSI designing. But the cutoffs are usually very high for this course.

What about inter-disciplinary courses?

People seem to have a thing against inter-disp courses. Most of them are not that bad and some like JCA at IIT Delhi are actually good. For some reason they don't get that much attention. Before you judge any course, I would suggest you contact someone from that course or from the same IIT and ask their feedback.

What about MS courses?

One common mistake made by most GATE aspirants is to apply for MS when they are could not get a seat in mtech. MS at IITs should not be considered a substitute for mtech. MS is research oriented. MS people do very few courses and mostly work on their thesis or project. Because courses at IITs are a great learning experience, MS guys mostly miss out on this opportunity. Technically MS could finish in 2 years time but mostly because of its research focus takes much more than that, typically 3 years. MS has usually the same placements as mtechs, but because it takes longer to finish, MS guys have to wait longer for the job. From a pure academic point of view, MS(R) is actually better as you can spend a lot of time on a research problem and if you get a proper guide you could really do some good work. But if you are in a hurry of getting a job, you should probably go for mtech.
Advantage of MS is that most IITs allow you to convert it to Phd if you have a good enough CGPA. So frankly, there is no point in doing MS if you are not willing to convert it to a Phd or do a Phd after you finish MS.

Preparation for Written test/interview.

All IITs have their own ways of conduction written tests and interview. Infact withing the same IIT, different departments also may have different procedures. When you apply to a certain course, find out the people already doing that course and find out about the admission procedure. They are the best guide.

Mostly for CS it would involve data structure/algorithms, programming in C, OS/Architecture or networks. Some courses/IITs may focus on some specific subjects depending on the problems the professors are working on. For eg. IITK written test/interview was mostly centered around Maths/probability/discrete mathematics etc. Note that the above information is subject to change every year as IITs add more courses and revise course structure for existing courses. I would suggest reading the PG admission brochure carefully for selecting a suitable course. PS: Please let me know your views/ideas/comments. This would help a lot in improving the blog. Thanks.

  3. nice work man .

Dude my rank is 174 and gate score 835

what are my chances for IIT Delhi , Madras and Kharaghpur ?

I have heard that IIT Madras and Kgp have admissions directly based on rank . Is it true ??

    ReplyDelete
  4. @prathu,

you r right, iitm and kgp have direct admissions. with a rank of 174, you have a pretty good change of admission to iitm, iitkgp, iitd and iitk. But in iitd you will have to appear for an interview and at iitk you will have to appear for written test and interview. Still i would say your chances are very good.

  7. your blog was very informative. thank you.if my rank is not good enuf to get into an iit then is it worth it trying for mtech in other central universities or should one try again next year? if so studing in which institutes is worth it? does year lags after be and before mtech have a negative impact? moreover is it good trying for gre? since i am a b-grade engg passout with avg result what should i do?

  8. @kunal,

there is no one working on game engine as such, but i think Prof. Subodh kumar is the prof. for graphics. i think you can work under him if you want to work on game engine.

  9. @anonymous

i dont know about central univs. but i think mtech at NITs, speically south nits is good. Their placement is also very good.
i dont think a year lag between BE and mtech will make a difference as long as you did your mtech properly.
i have no idea about gre.

  11. Hi, I found this is best blog I found ever for M.tech. aspirant. I am completed my B.tech. in Computer Engg. and now doing MBA from average college. The decision for doing MBA from this type of college is one of my big mistake. I think the M.tech. is only for the people those want to become professor at college. but after that I realise that was my mistake. I am good at computer from early time. Now I want to do M.tech. from IIT/IISc. So, the 2 years of my mBA will do any effect at admission/Interview time? Your personal suggestion is favourable.

  12. @ikrishnendu
i dont know about mtech RA. U can ask someone in orkut forums. There u will get exact information.
I dont think 2009 passout is a problem for mtech.

    @Eathen
    Thanks a lot...
Your mba experience will not help you for mtech admission. Please think hard before joining mtech as you are completely changing your career. whether mtech is better or mba is better field for you, that only you can decide.

  14. one more query regarding GATE 2011.as IIT M is conducting this year GATE and it was last in 2003.and it was a bit tough paper compared to other year, yes its true we can not expect a 2009 like easy paper..but if its tough also my question to you that what could be the marks out of 100(worst case) is needed to get an IIT?
    thank you..

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi, thank you for your reply. I feel very insecurity in MBA because of the college in which I am studying. I am not confident in this field as I am in my bachelor time.

I am not thinking about how the MBA is useful in m.tech. admission or during M.tech., but i want to know is there any negative effect there on my profile at the time of admission?

Do you think that MBA degree will be helpful after some time working in company as a software professional after m.tech.?

So, last question.. will the double master degree give me advantage in future?

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Krishnendu i have no idea about marks. they didnt give marks in 2008 when i appeared so i dont think in marks terms. in any case, its very tricky to predict this as it depends on toughness of the paper, no. of candidates, no. of seats in IITs, their reservation policy etc.

@Eathen I really cant say if mba + mtech will be good or bad. This is a very rare combination. Perhaps it could give you some advantage later in your career. I dont think it will help in placements at iit.

    ReplyDelete
  17. if someone don't have 60% marks the have only 59%. which IITs allow for those??

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sir i appeared in GATE 2011 (CS)i m expecting
52-54 marks. Will i get any of the IITs? Specially IITB, IITD, IITK......... what will be my percentile and rank according to your estimation?
    Pls rep soon sir......thnka you

  19. Hey nice article. I have a small query and would be really thankful if you could advise me. I have graduated in EE and want to do Mtech is CS. I believe I am eligible to apply. How ever what i find confusing is the way to prepare. I have got some Brilliant material which i use t skim the materials and syllabus. However i find that my understanding is not that clear. What would suggest for ppl like me ?

    ReplyDelete
  20. @MR. Atom

You sure are eligible to apply.
The best way to study for GATE is through the syllabus books themselves. you use the prep material only after your concepts are clear and you only need to revise. for details refer my another post in this same blog where i have discussed what books to use for what subject. hope that will be helpful.

  21. Ihank you for such a informative blog.
    Sir, i have scored 63.67marks(AIR 272,Score 798) in GATE2011-CSE.
my percentage in B.tech is above 75%, i have heard that in some IITs, they offer direct admission for students having above 75% in btech.
is there any chance to get a direct admission in any IIT and from which IIT, i can get call for interview?
This year,IIT Madras and IIT Rorkee have admissions directly based on rank . Is it true???

    ReplyDelete
  22. @anuj,

iit delhi offers direct admit for percentage > 75 but i dont think with 272 rank you can get direct admit in iit delhi. otherwise you have a chance of admission in all iits (except iitb) after written test/interview.

  23. Hi,

    ReplyDelete
  26. @aveek, i appeared for iitd jca interview. the questions were related to general CS concepts. dont know what questions are asked in MCS interviews.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Which is better option JCA @IIT Delhi or M.tech CSE Department @IIT roorkee?
Does JCA students consider for Phd in Computer Science after completing their M.tech(as it is an interdisciplinary course)?
    B,Tech discipline is CS.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @anuj,

i my opinion, definitely JCA. this is because with jca you can take almost all elective subjects and also your project from CS dept at iit delhi. that makes it almost similar to MCS at iit delhi. i have not heard a lot of good things about iit roorkee. people say there are not many good cs profs there. also placement wise iit delhi is any day better.

JCA students are considered for phd. i know people who have done phd in iit delhi after jca.

  39. @krrish,

though i dont know much about VDTT course, i have heard its really good. course contents etc. you could get from prospectus or from vdtt home page http://vdtt.iitd.ac.in/index.html
people prefer it over IISc blore for electronics and vlsi. IITD has some really good profs for architecture and electronics (both in CS and EE dept.). From what I have been told, the order of preference for vlsi would be iitd followed by iisc followed by iitb.

  40. Hi,
Can a MSc(IT) student do Mtech(CS) from IIT with valid GATE score????

    ReplyDelete
  41. @vinod,
all iits make their own rules about eligibility etc. the best place to know this is the Admission Brochure released by iits after the GATE results. looking at 2008 IIT Delhi brochure, i dont see anything for MSc(IT), but rules could change every year. So go through the Admission Brochure of each IIT carefully. If you dont get information in the brochure, you can call the admission department or drop a mail to the HOD of the department you are interested in. they will consider your case.
